 Knitted baby blankets

Knitted children's blankets - a special theme of needlework. Despite the fact that in the store today you can buy anything, and with a fairly high-quality performance, nothing can compare with a unique product created with your own hands with an embedded piece of love for your child. It is in this lies the secret of such products, which differ from textile analogues in appearance and by their very appearance create a special atmosphere of comfort.

Features and benefits

Knitted children's rugs are unique creations. They are intended for children, decorate the bed and give it a neat, exclusive look. In addition to the aesthetic load, they are multifunctional.

Depending on the age of the child, such products can:

  • protect the bed from mechanical damage, children's creativity, liquid spilling;
  • be a soft and warm sweater-cocoon, wrapping the child in a chair or on the couch while reading books, board games, doing lessons;
  • serve as a kind of bulk diaper, replacing the blanket when swaddling babies;
  • be the first developing rug of the baby when he only learns to crawl;
  • be litter on the floor when the baby learns to walk;
  • replace a small blanket in the summer or in the off season.

Such products are diverse and have a lot of advantages. They:

  • made from natural yarn, artificial origin, or their mix;
  • intended for children of different ages (from newborns to teenagers) and gender (for girls and boys);
  • they are distinguished by the variability of the size range, allowing you to choose or execute independently a product to the existing furniture, taking into account its dimensions;
  • have a large selection of colors, which is convenient and contributes to the successful combination of such products with existing furniture and other interior details;
  • they are bright accents of a children's room or a link of style items, they can indicate a design idea or be customized for a specific room item;
  • depending on the chosen pattern, they can bring a sense of light and space into the space;
  • performing for newborns and toddlers, do not need a color combination with interior items;
  • mostly made with a hook or knitting needles, although there is also a line of “machine” analogues, as well as a mixed technique in which both the hook and the spokes are used;
  • made of a material of different textures, which allows you to create products with openwork, a modest pattern or a large relief;
  • do not always need large quantities of raw materials for manufacturing;
  • Depending on the type of knitting, the amount of yarn and the size of the web, they differ in different total cost of the input material.

In addition to the main material, in the production of children's knitted blankets use a different decor. More often, these are pompons, colorful fringe, tassels, crocheted lace. Models for school-age children can be decorated more progressively: beads are inserted into loops, forming a certain pattern.However, this technique is rare, because the main purpose of the rug is to give warmth and comfort.

Unfortunately, at the mass of advantages, knitted children's plaids demand a lot of time for production. This process is quite laborious and requires not only accuracy and perseverance: the execution of the loops and the pattern must be uniform, otherwise this disadvantage will affect the appearance of the finished product.

Other disadvantages of knitted blankets for children include their weight. If a small canvas can still be equated to textile analogues, products for school-age children are not so much bulky as they are heavy. Not always, but it can cause discomfort, causing the child to refuse such a thing as a blanket.

Therefore, before making any children's blanket, you need to consciously approach the choice of yarn: it should be light and bulky (for example, grass).

In addition to weight, blankets have such a property as elasticity. This is good for a sweater, but it is not always convenient for filling up a bed or a sofa, because it needs to be refilled without distortions of the pattern of the canvas, folds and rubs.

By type of design, knitted children's blankets can be:

  • classic plan, standard rectangular or square shape;
  • non-standard form (in the form of a circle, an oval, a rhombus, obeying the dimensions of the bed);
  • model-transformer, combining the function of a rug and developing rug motility.

The first products are more traditional, they can have a longitudinal or transverse pattern (depending on how they are knitted), run row by row, forming a one-piece cloth or from separate fragments (squares) of identical dimensions, connecting with a hook or needle and thread. Non-standard models may differ viscous in a circle or diagonal, starting a pattern from a corner.

Materials and color

Yarn for knitting baby blankets varied. However, with a wealth of choices for such products, light and possibly thin threads with a hollow fiber structure and a large distance between them are used: limbage, grass, cotton, cashmere, wool, wool blend, acrylic, polyamide, velsoft are suitable. You can knit a blanket from a special yarn factory "Limbazu." These threads are economical and special: models connected from limbage become volumetric after washing.

Choosing threads in the store, you can pay attention to the mark “Children's”: this yarn is soft in texture, it practically does not prick and has a variety of texture.

This is the usual twisted thread, and fiber with thickenings, pile, thread-band with pompoms and other types. In addition, the label always indicates the footage and the number of the spokes: this is useful for creating a rug and will simplify the selection of materials.

What to look for?

Performing a blanket for a child, it is worth taking note of a few tips:

  • too voluminous product is not always convenient for babies (it is not necessary to sculpt animals and toys weighing its weight to a rug);
  • You should not overload the blanket with an abundance of patterns and trim: it is ugly, it deprives the product of beauty and sense of style
  • embroidery on knitted fabric flattens the texture of the material;
  • it is not necessary to decorate the blanket around the edges with a thin thread for knitting napkins: the pattern will not be visible unless it is starched;
  • it is preferable to choose a model drawing symmetrical: it will look harmonious and complete;
  • a pattern of residues of different yarns in texture can disrupt the integrity of the fabric's texture, which will affect the appearance of the plaid;
  • a small contrasting pattern provokes ripples in the eyes: this will become an annoying factor and may cause a negative attitude to the product.

To turn a thin canvas into a full-fledged blanket, you can make a textile lining (for example, fleece). When combined with a cloth, the blanket becomes warmer and can be used as a complete blanket.

However, it is worth remembering: textiles should be bi-elastic and pleasant to the body, not accumulating static electricity.

Dimensions

The parameters of the plaid can be any, however, it is worth starting from the age and height of the child:

  • for a baby knit a plaid 100x100 or 80x100, 70x125 cm (suitable for a stroller or a cradle);
  • for sheltering children it is better to knit rectangular models 100x140, 110x140 cm (they are more convenient), measuring the length and width of the existing blanket;
  • the length and width of the model should cover the surface of the bed;
  • the product is knitted with a margin to growth, since children grow very quickly, and it will take a long time to create.

Knitting techniques and patterns

Perhaps, only experienced masters know the number of techniques that can be used to knit a blanket to a child. During a masterful hike for any knitted rug, absolutely any pattern can fit (knitting loin, kerchief knit, Scandinavian ornament, Bavarian technique, Tunisian knitting).

Knitting styles weight.Each of them brings to the design something special and unique. This can be used to make the product not only the highlight of the room, but also in harmony with the general idea of design.

Good motives for knitting a children's rug are the styles:

  • boho - easy negligence, while comfort and freedom, performed exclusively from natural materials (wool, cotton), as the style does not accept synthetics;
  • missoni - contrasting horizontal zigzags as a simple pattern, and with the addition of lace motifs;
  • broomstick - Peruvian knitting with crossed loops, performed by crochet or thick knitting needles, smooth stick, orderly technique from monophonic or color changing yarn, forming an openwork pattern;
  • swing - “partial knitting”, shortened rows, waves, motley raznotsvete, performed with the use of markers in the form of pins (a great way to use leftover yarn).

Ideas

Knitted baby blanket is a great opportunity to show skill and imagination. You can decorate the canvas texture, openwork pattern or three-dimensional elements.

An interesting way to decorate is to create a pattern of colored threads.

Themes can be very different: these are all kinds of beautiful motifs with hearts, bears, children's cartoon characters or fairy tales, flowers, lambs, a bunny. The pattern can be created in a different way (in order or from individual squares with knitting of a specific motif

Looks nice and a single picture. Usually, the canvas remains rectangular, but the main area is occupied by a large drawing in the form of a toy (rug “bunny”). Those who like to work with one yarn, choose the thread with the change of color: these blankets look very gentle. However, it is worth considering: the braids, harnesses, the intersection of the loops reduce the width of the canvas. Therefore, before work it is necessary to make a calculation of the loops and tie the sample.

It is important to take into account: creative models of very large threads, forming spits 20 cm wide, are unacceptable for children, they are very heavy, and they look inappropriate.
