What length and width should be curtains? Determine the height from the floor

When choosing curtains, many modern consumers mainly focus on color, pattern, less often on texture, forgetting that the design of window textiles is also its length with width. At the same time, it is almost impossible to choose such an accessory correctly without the correct calculation of the size, so consider what the product parameters should be.

Height classification

It is not entirely correct to say that there are standard sizes of curtains in height - their length, in fact, depends on the height of the ceilings.

But there are standards defined by designers of how far a curtain can go down.

  • The shortest, and therefore inexpensive curtains are limited to the sill, and, more precisely, do not even reach it by about 1-2 cm.This solution is not used in small spaces, as it is, as it were, cutting the vertical. But in the assembled version and in a light color scheme, a similar idea is perfect for a Mediterranean-style kitchen or dining room.
  • An interesting, but relatively rare option is to use ready-made kits that will close the sill with a margin of 10-20 cm. The solution can be interesting to fit into almost any interior, but there are a lot of restrictions for just that length - for example, the sill should not be used, and with the window you can not have any electrical appliances, not to mention the stove.
  • One of the most popular solutions are curtains, in which the height from the floor is limited to only 5-7 cm. Given preference for this length, you need to remember that with a considerable width of the window and an abundance of heavy folds you will always feel that the ceiling is lower than it is in fact. However, for standard apartments of the old building with a height of 240-250 cm, this solution is quite appropriate.
  • There is also a demand for the standard of length, which is known as “to the floor,” although in fact the minimum distance from the floor in the range of 1.5–2 cm is usually maintained even here. Many people like this solution because of their thoroughness - such design can often be found in the hall, and the chosen length usually implies a full opening of the opening and in width.

With the help of such long curtains often mask small irregularities of the floor, taking place along the plinths.

  • The most elegant look especially long curtains with folds, which partially lie on the floor - the search length can be from 10 to 30 cm, and the total length of the curtain, respectively, 3 meters in low rooms, and up to 4 meters in high. It should be borne in mind that it is inconvenient to take care of this accessory, because it quickly becomes dirty and requires constant care, including washing and unfolding on the floor. However, for the bathroom such a solution is optimal, because it allows you to protect the space from splashing water.

As for tulle, it is almost always appropriate, and in all the described variants, except for the first one, since its length should coincide with the length of the main curtain.

How to determine the length of the fabric for curtains?

Today, the rejection of ready-made kits in favor of custom-tailoring a fabric item selected by the customer is very common. It should be understood that it will be problematic to increase the missing length - at least the original design will be lost, and very few people will want to overpay for a significant amount of excess fabric. Therefore, you need to understand how to choose the length of the cut.

First you need to decide on one of the types of curtains described above. It should be noted that in most cases, however, long curtains are chosen - they are appropriate only when the space of the window sill is actively used. In any case, short drapes are usually needed either to emphasize the lightness of the style, or as meeting strict safety requirements.

The next step is to determine the size of the area, which is planned to close the curtain. Height is measured from the ceiling eaves to the window sill or floor (depending on the type of length, which is preferred), and the measurements should be carried out at several control points, which must be at least five. This is especially true in old houses, which are characterized by sinking processes, because of which the cocoon opening can be skewed.Repeated measurement of height at different points will also allow you to hide possible unevenness of the floor, or at least not to face an unpleasant surprise, already having ready-made curtains.

The distance from the eaves to the floor is far from the final length of the curtains, because you need to take into account a few more important points. At least the upper part of the fabric is partially hemmed, and a few centimeters can go to the fasteners - for example, curtains with eyelets usually require a reserve of a good 10 cm length, but a couple of centimeters can be enough for hooks.

A small percentage of the length is guaranteed to level the folds, because the norm is to increase the length by another 2-4 cm. This moment is quite complicated for a beginner, therefore it is advisable to actively consult with the seller in a fabric store. If the curtain should be literally the length of the floor, it is desirable to make it shorter by one or two centimeters - when the fabric is not dragged along the floor, it will make it cleaner, and the interior will not spoil anything.

Today’s fashion is unusual curtains, which are asymmetrical as opposed to the classic rectangle, and sometimes even have shaped cuts of complex shape. If it is intended to sew such portieres into the room, it is already undesirable to get by with minimal measurements like the ones described above, it is worthwhile to draw a detailed outline of the product with dimensions, several times having rechecked everything.

Selection width

As for the width, here the main determining factor is the ceiling cornice. Good curtains should give the opportunity to curtain the window completely, along the entire length of the eaves, so you should start with measuring the last indicator. The extreme positions of the left and right hooks are chosen as starting points; if the device is intended for a cringle, measurements are taken from those points beyond which they can no longer enter.

It is wrong to think that the length of the eaves means the width of the curtains, since you could hardly see a window curtained with a perfectly even curtain somewhere. An exception can be made except for the narrowest windows with a width of no more than one and a half meters, in all other cases, the fabric is necessarily taken with a margin to leave the opportunity to form attractive folds.

There is a common formula, according to which a cornice of 1.5-2 meters implies a curtain that is one and a half times longer than this size. And with the length of the cornice over two meters, the curtain should be two or more times wider, and the indicators grow proportionally - a lot of folds are needed for a wide window. However, this is already a matter of taste of every consumer.

Tips for choosing

For a person who is not alien to the innate sense of beauty, it is possible to create an interior on his own without being guided by certain generally accepted norms, however, most people would sincerely be delighted to receive a hint about the choice of curtain style.

We picked up several popular recommendations for all rooms of a typical apartment.

  • For a typical bedroom the most advantageous solution is the curtains to the floor, which in the minimalist design of the room to sleep are the main focus. The presence of tulle of the same length in this case is necessary - this is how a constant dimmed lighting and a feeling of solitude are achieved. The only exception to the rule is the location of the bed directly under the window - in this case, long curtains will most likely interfere, because it is better to choose them up to the window sill.
  • Children's according to its principles, it predominantly corresponds to a bedroom for adults, but in the case of very small inhabitants, special requirements appear. So, long curtains are literally contraindicated here - even if the owners do not have enough strength to tear them along with the eaves, they will be at least permanently soiled. For this reason, for the children's room it is much more often to choose short window curtains or even more modern options like roller blinds, which cover only the window opening.
  • For most kitchens The optimal solution is also short curtains - this is caused by both fire safety requirements and concern for the cleanliness of the fabric. In addition, the kitchens in many houses of the old building differ in relatively small area, and therefore the sill can be used to store utensils or even as a small table - this aspect also speaks in favor of the short version, which should not even reach the window sill. Experiments with long curtains to create an atypical interior are only relevant if there is enough space in the kitchen and no electrical or gas appliances are located next to the window.
  • Living room theoretically gives the maximum space for experiments and experiments, but the demonstration of chic is considered traditional here. This means that curtains dragging on the floor will not be more appropriate anywhere than in this room.

At the same time, it is not necessary to turn your own living room into a Soviet house of culture - the curtain will certainly create an impression of immenseness, therefore preference should be given to light fabrics that flutter in the draft and do not create ugly fractures.
