At the same time, it is almost impossible to choose such an accessory correctly without the correct calculation of the size, so consider what the product parameters should be.

It is not entirely correct to say that there are standard sizes of curtains in height - their length, in fact, depends on the height of the ceilings.

But there are standards defined by designers of how far a curtain can go down.

• The shortest, and therefore inexpensive curtains are limited to the sill, and, more precisely, do not even reach it by about 1-2 cm.This solution is not used in small spaces, as it is, as it were, cutting the vertical. But in the assembled version and in a light color scheme, a similar idea is perfect for a Mediterranean-style kitchen or dining room.
• An interesting, but relatively rare option is to use ready-made kits that will close the sill with a margin of 10-20 cm. The solution can be interesting to fit into almost any interior, but there are a lot of restrictions for just that length - for example, the sill should not be used, and with the window you can not have any electrical appliances, not to mention the stove.

• One of the most popular solutions are curtains, in which the height from the floor is limited to only 5-7 cm. Given preference for this length, you need to remember that with a considerable width of the window and an abundance of heavy folds you will always feel that the ceiling is lower than it is in fact. However, for standard apartments of the old building with a height of 240-250 cm, this solution is quite appropriate.
• There is also a demand for the standard of length, which is known as “to the floor,” although in fact the minimum distance from the floor in the range of 1.5–2 cm is usually maintained even here.Many people like this solution because of their thoroughness - such design can often be found in the hall, and the chosen length usually implies a full opening of the opening and in width.

• The most elegant look especially long curtains with folds, which partially lie on the floor - the search length can be from 10 to 30 cm, and the total length of the curtain, respectively, 3 meters in low rooms, and up to 4 meters in high. It should be borne in mind that it is inconvenient to take care of this accessory, because it quickly becomes dirty and requires constant care, including washing and unfolding on the floor. However, for the bathroom such a solution is optimal, because it allows you to protect the space from splashing water.

Today, the rejection of ready-made kits in favor of custom-tailoring a fabric item selected by the customer is very common.It should be understood that it will be problematic to increase the missing length - at least the original design will be lost, and very few people will want to overpay for a significant amount of excess fabric. Therefore, you need to understand how to choose the length of the cut.

First you need to decide on one of the types of curtains described above. It should be noted that in most cases, however, long curtains are chosen - they are appropriate only when the space of the window sill is actively used. In any case, short drapes are usually needed either to emphasize the lightness of the style, or as meeting strict safety requirements.

The next step is to determine the size of the area, which is planned to close the curtain. Height is measured from the ceiling eaves to the window sill or floor (depending on the type of length, which is preferred), and the measurements should be carried out at several control points, which must be at least five. This is especially true in old houses, which are characterized by sinking processes, because of which the cocoon opening can be skewed.Repeated measurement of height at different points will also allow you to hide possible unevenness of the floor, or at least not to face an unpleasant surprise, already having ready-made curtains.

A small percentage of the length is guaranteed to level the folds, because the norm is to increase the length by another 2-4 cm. If the curtain should be literally the length of the floor, it is desirable to make it shorter by one or two centimeters - when the fabric is not dragged along the floor, it will make it cleaner, and the interior will not spoil anything.

Today’s fashion is unusual curtains, which are asymmetrical as opposed to the classic rectangle, and sometimes even have shaped cuts of complex shape.If it is intended to sew such portieres into the room, it is already undesirable to get by with minimal measurements like the ones described above, it is worthwhile to draw a detailed outline of the product with dimensions, several times having rechecked everything.

In addition, the kitchens in many houses of the old building differ in relatively small area, and therefore the sill can be used to store utensils or even as a small table - this aspect also speaks in favor of the short version, which should not even reach the window sill. Experiments with long curtains to create an atypical interior are only relevant if there is enough space in the kitchen and no electrical or gas appliances are located next to the window.
