 Blinds on skylights

Over the past decade, the use of attic space for living rooms and studios has become increasingly popular. Attic is no longer considered an attic, filled with things that are a pity to throw out. Now it's more and more spacious original rooms and additional meters of living space.

Curtain Features

Attic - a non-standard room under the roof of the house, the windows of which most often have an unusual shape and are at an angle to the floor, directly in the sloping roof surface. In addition to the form, dormer windows have another feature - they let in a lot of sunlight. Ordinary curtains are not suitable for such windows, so you need to choose curtains of a certain type that will meet several requirements at once:

  • fit snugly to the opening all the way around the window;
  • do not hang in the middle;
  • protect from the bright sun and overheating in the summer months;
  • have a convenient control mechanism.

All these requirements are met by specially designed attic blinds, which have a convenient mechanism for adjusting the flow of light and do not fade in the sun.

Species

To date, the most popular are several types of blinds for attic windows. Their quality and functionality is time-tested, they are rightly popular with owners of attic space. Blinds tightly fastened to the window opening, are easy to operate, even if they are high above the head, they allow to regulate the flow of light, do not interfere with the adjustment of the windows themselves. The most popular types of mansard blinds:

Aluminum Blinds

The most economical and common option. Blinds consist of horizontal plates - lamels, interconnected by cords, which serve as a control mechanism. Aluminum is a lightweight, durable material that care for it is easy, even if there is a kitchen in the attic room.It is enough to wipe the slats with a damp sponge with ordinary dishwashing detergent.

Roller blinds

The main feature of this type of blinds - a solid canvas, tight to the window frame.

The material of the product is a dense fabric impregnated with special compounds, due to which the fabric does not fade in the sun and does not collect dust. With the help of lifting mechanisms, the fabric is easily folded into a roll and retracted into a small block located at the top of the frame.

Roller blinds - one of the most convenient options for non-standard windows. The system of their fastenings is designed so that they become one with the window frame, do not interfere with opening the windows for ventilation, even when unfolded.

Caring for roller blinds is different from the care of aluminum. This type of product requires dry cleaning and does not tolerate moisture.

Pleated blinds

A variation of roof curtains, which is a combination of aluminum and fabric blinds. It consists of horizontal slats, completely clothed in fabric. This structure creates the effect of small folds and looks very elegant.

With the help of a cord and a lifting mechanism, the blinds-pleats are assembled into an “accordion”, do not interfere with opening the window, as they are attached directly to the frame.

The fabric material of such curtains can be very diverse, from thick fabric that does not let the sun's rays through to light translucent organza and tulle. The latter are unlikely to be suitable for large attic windows, since they will not perform their main function - protection from bright light. In addition, the larger the window, the greater the likelihood of sagging of this type of blinds. But they can decorate a small triangular or trapezoidal windows, giving the room a bit of romanticism and airiness.

Materials

In the manufacture of fabric roller blinds is used covering the composition, which allows the canvas to reflect sunlight. This prevents the room from overheating on particularly hot days, since the space under the roof itself is very hot.

Aluminum blinds are usually covered with reflective paint. The light metal itself does not heat up, does not fade in the sun. Pleated blinds are rather an interior decoration; they can be made from a wide variety of types of fabrics.

When choosing blinds should be aware that they differ in the requirements for operation and frequency of use.

The more often you open the window located on the slope of the roof, the more often the blinds will be in an inclined position and the higher the probability of their sagging. In this case, it is better to choose a more dense material and strong fasteners.

Outdoor models

There are several options for outdoor models.

Rolling systems

Bulky windows of the attic, located on the roof, need not only protection from the scorching summer sun, but also against heat leakage during the cold season. For such windows, it is most advantageous to install external roller shutter systems consisting of steel lamellae and reliably protecting window openings from gusts of wind and rain.

The shutters are controlled from the inside of the room, using a remote control or a manual mechanism. When lifting, the mechanism folds up and retracts the lamellae in the outside box.

Awnings

Another type of blinds, which, like roller shutter systems, is more like shutters, as it is mounted outside the window. Awnings are adjustable "peaks" of durable acrylic material impregnated with special compounds that prevent soaking and absorption of dirt.

Fabric visor is mounted on light retractable rods made of durable alloys. The awnings are also controlled from the inside of the room, raising and lowering the rods, and with them the whole canopy of the canvas.

Installation

If you are not directly involved in the installation of window systems and blinds by profession, it would be better to entrust this process to professionals. This is especially true of the installation of external blinds. Manufacturers can offer the installation service themselves when buying a product or you can contact a window installation company. Wizards will make measurements of the window, calculate the option of fixings for non-standard windows and save you from the time-consuming process and errors.

Skylights do not have ebbs and window sills, they can be round, trapezoidal, triangular, the mechanism of their opening can be very different from standard windows. Therefore, the blinds on the skylights are attached directly to the window opening, with the help of thin cables that ensure a tight fit of the canvas to the window opening. This does not interfere with the mobility of the window, even with the blinds lowered, does not allow the canvas to sag.

For blinds on hard-to-reach windows on the slope of the roof, as well as for outdoor shutters and awnings, remote control systems are used. Using the remote, it is easy to open and close the blinds, change the direction of the luminous flux, adjust the position of the blinds.

Color solutions

Since the attic is most often a small attic, the best choice would be a bright color scheme. This will visually expand the space, make it more spacious and filled with air. Light tan blinds will not interfere with light penetration, and in day-night versions they are able to create twilight even in the daytime.

Rolled curtains - the most suitable option for drawing various color prints, depending on interior design. This type of blinds is the best fit for the design of the attic windows in any style and color scheme.

Styling

Curtains on the windows are an indispensable attribute of any design of the room, and the attic is no exception. Pick up the blinds is not difficult, if we proceed from the general style of the interior:

  • Minimalism. The basics of minimalism - simplicity and functionality.This style will suit any systems blinds quiet unassuming colors. It can be aluminum, varnished lamellas, or a single range of roller blinds.
  • High tech. The modern futuristic style assumes the presence of clear cold tones of a white-steel gamut, interspersed with bright spots in some interior details. Gray shiny aluminum blinds, cast steel shine - this is the most successful solution for high-tech style.
  • Classic. In a classic style, usually spacious attic rooms are designed for a bedroom or study. Blinds for such a room should correspond to a respectable and rich design of the room. Roman blinds are suitable from textured fabric, with silver or gold patterns in the texture of the canvas. But the dark colors used in classic style for curtains in a normal room can darken the space if they are used in the colors of the blinds.
  • Country Perhaps the most appropriate style for the design of an attic room. Any direction of country style, be it Provence, chalet or ethno, is perfectly combined with the attic of a country house.Blinds for a room in this style can be a variety of materials and colors. However, modern lacquered metal lamella options should be avoided.
  • Ethno. The most suitable option for the style of ethno - materials from wood or stylized under it. It can also be all sorts of wicker webs of rolled blinders that let through thin rays of light through woven dry herbs that create the atmosphere of a hut.
  • Provence. Provence, as a type of country style, is a rural pastoral of French lavender fields. Blinds of light shades that match the style of a room can be visually aged, interspersed with small cracks. The color range varies within delicate colors: pink, purple, blue shades, a large number of milky or beige.

Pleated blinds are a great addition to this style. Colorful floral patterns, peas, a cage, small flowers of pastel shades in combination with the plisse technique will create a romantic look for ruffles and frills on the window opening.

  • Chalet. The style of the houses of the Alpine hunters, made in an expensive modern design, perfectly suited blinds from wood unpainted materials,wood slats themselves will be a sufficient complement to this style. If you add on top of them another airy white tulle, fastened with crossbars, this will give the room a more romantic and cozy look.
