How to dilute the water-based paint?

Many modern building materials need additional surface protection. For such purposes, apply several types of paints. Particular attention should be paid to water-based compositions that are safe and versatile. Products of this type are particularly popular because they can cover different types of materials, which makes them popular in everyday life and at industrial enterprises.

Paint features

Aqueous emulsion solutions are artificial mixtures that are used to coat products in order to protect against corrosion. Products of this kind are particularly popular because they are environmentally friendly to humans and the environment.

The water emulsion consists of several main components:

  • Dyes. These are special substances that have a homogeneous structure.
  • The solvent. As this product, use ordinary water, which quickly evaporates, without emitting unpleasant and harmful odors.
  • Binder mixture. The composition of paints can be supplemented by various additions that affect the technical characteristics of the solutions.

Water based paints have several significant advantages over their counterparts:

  • Low cost. Such compositions buy under the force of each, it does not hit the wallet.
  • Drying speed. Some types of solutions acquire strength within a few hours after application.
  • Environmental friendliness. In the composition of the mixtures are present only safe and natural products.
  • Good mixing performance. This allows you to change the color of the paint by adding different colors, which should be added to the composition of the solution in the right quantity.

Paints of this type are not practical. You can apply them, provided that the air temperature is above +5 degrees.Since the mixture contains water, it is easy to wipe off the film layer with a liquid. Therefore, such paints are used only in relatively dry rooms, where there is no direct effect on the painted surface with water solutions.

Kinds

Water based paints on the market for a long time. The popularity of the material led to the emergence of several types of these products. Depending on the type of binder, several types of paints can be distinguished:

  • Latex. The most popular solutions that can be washed after drying. The advantage of these products is plasticity, which allows to close up small cracks with their help.
  • Acrylic. The main component of the solution is acrylic resin, which protects materials well from moisture. Such paints are elastic and high cost.
  • Silicone. Here, silicone resins are used as a binding element. Such varieties are distinguished by plasticity.
  • Silicate. Paints of this type are not capable of repelling water qualitatively, therefore it is best to paint surfaces in special protective clothing.
  • Polyvinyl acetate. The composition of such paint is added with PVA glue, which qualitatively binds the pigments together. This material is the cheapest and short-lived, so they are used quite rarely.

We select the solvent

High-quality water-based paints do not need to be diluted, since their consistency has already been brought to optimum performance by the manufacturer. But there are certain situations when it is simply necessary to dilute the mixture:

  • The paint is thick initially. Such materials are relatively rare. But if there is a need to apply a solvent, how to do it correctly, the manufacturer indicates on the packaging.
  • The mixture thickened. This happens when the paint is not used for a long time. The water from it evaporates, and the dye becomes thick and begins to harden. Even if you dissolve such a dried mixture, you will not get the original water-based paint. This is due to the fact that the products lose their technical characteristics during drying.

It is possible to part a water emulsion in the different ways:

  • Special blends. Prepare them on the basis of water and components that are present in the composition of a particular product. You can purchase such compositions in any specialized store, where you will be told the parameters of mixtures.
  • Water. This solution is the main and most affordable. With this liquid it is easy to dilute any type of paint. Experts recommend using for such purposes only relatively clean water. Do not allow the presence of inclusions in the solution, which are visible to the naked eye.

Dilution technology

Water-based paints interact perfectly with water. Therefore, to dissolve such a composition is quite easy and fast. This process consists of several consecutive steps:

  • Initially, the desired volume of paint should be added to one container, and clean water should be poured into the second one.
  • Then liquid is added to the mixture in small portions. It is important to constantly stir the solution, it contributes to the uniform distribution of all components.
  • If it is necessary to change the color, a special color can be added along with the water. The hue is selected individually, it depends on the characteristics of the initial solution. Similarly, decorative glitter can be introduced into the structure.

When mixing water and water emulsion, foam may form on the surface of the solution. It is advisable to use the liquid after it has settled, and the mixture becomes homogeneous.

Recommendations

Mixing water-based paint is a fairly simple operation that even an untrained person can perform. To get a quality mix, you should follow a few simple recommendations.

Observe the proportions when mixing. It is desirable that the amount of water added does not exceed 10% of the total. Part 1 should be taken up by solvent, and 9 should be water based paint itself.

Exact percentages are often indicated on the packaging. Do not exceed the recommendations of the manufacturer, it can lead to the loss of its film strength characteristics after curing.

Water should not be dirty. Not every tap fluid can be used as a solution. The quality of the dilution can be affected by various chemical compounds. Therefore, it is important to consider the recommendations of the manufacturer.

Dissolve the paint should be water at room temperature. Do not use hot liquids, as they may destroy the bonds between the dye and the base of the mixture. This will lead to loss of durability and degradation of performance.

If there is no time, you can mix the cold and hot liquid, bringing it to room temperature.

Dilution of water-based paint - the ability to obtain a solution of the desired consistency. Such an approach will provide not only a reliably protected, but also a beautiful surface, which is distinguished by its practicality and long service life.
