Odorless paint for interior work: the subtleties of choice

Often in the repair of interior, and especially a residential apartment, paint is used as a finishing material. Walls, furniture, parquet or wooden floor of MDF panels - for all this you can apply a special paint. And for rooms in which ventilation is very limited, odorless paints are the best fit. They are safe, relatively quick-drying and are excellent, for example, for work in the nursery.

Special features

As it becomes clear from the name, the main feature of such paints is the absence of an unpleasant and often toxic smell, which many simply cannot stand. The second important feature, especially convenient when repairing, is the rate of drying of such paint.

Depending on humidity, temperature, layer thickness and other parameters, the drying time can be only half an hour, or even less.

Kinds

Safe paintwork materials can be divided into several varieties:

  • oil;
  • acrylic;
  • water dispersion;
  • latex.

All of these species have specific advantages and disadvantages, as we will discuss below.

Oily

Made on an oil basis and differ in that they do not have a strong odor. They are composed of linseed oil, acting as a solvent, and pigment additives. These paints can be both color and colorless, it is possible to paint them and metal products, and wood, and even plaster. In addition, this paint is used for decorative painting - inscriptions, drawings, patterns and the like. Their disadvantage is that they are relatively long-lasting.

Acrylic

The most common kind of odorless paint. It is applied practically to all types of materials. Along with oil, such paints are often used for decoration.

Acrylic based paintwork materials have a number of advantages over allthe rest:

  • The list of components is completely devoid of toxins, therefore, there are no odors.
  • Safety for builders and tenants.
  • Fire resistance
  • A wide range of applications.
  • Easy application to the surface.
  • A large number of colors.
  • A variety of textures.
  • Non-cracking coating.
  • Quick drying
  • Greater resistance to stress and abrasion.
  • Resistance to external influences, such as humidity, temperature, ultraviolet radiation.

However, there were some drawbacks too: acrylic paints are relatively expensive. Polyacrylates have white color, therefore special compositions are used for color design - colors. Using color schemes, you can achieve almost any key, the main thing is to choose the right proportions, but in many hardware stores there is a service for finding the right color scheme. The buyer only has to choose the color.

Acrylic paints and varnishes at the production stage are sometimes completed with additives with antiseptic properties. These additives prevent mold and fungi.This property can be useful when painting wood in rooms with a high moisture content.

Water dispersion

Water is used as a solvent for the dispersion particles, as a result of which these paints are considered safe. Water dispersion paint is used for walls and ceilings. Such paints and varnishes are always white and have a high water resistance, due to which, painted surfaces can be washed without fear of damage to the coating. They are odorless and have excellent decorative characteristics. As well as acrylic, water-dispersion paints are white and can also take on the desired shade with the help of color schemes.

Latex

Latex enamels are also odorless and are not classified as harmful paints and varnishes. This enamel can safely paint various surfaces, such as plaster, brick, wallpaper and others. The difference of such compounds in high strength and wear resistance. Due to the presence of latex in the list of components, such material is not subject to overdry and swelling.

These paints can be used for painting kitchens.Primary drying takes place already half an hour later, and complete drying takes about one hour.

How to choose?

To choose the right paint, you need to start to figure out what surfaces will be painted. The same waterborne paints should not be applied to heaters, wood and metals. For example, in the case when you need to paint the floor and the battery, the water-dispersion composition is not suitable, you should choose a different kind of paint and varnish materials, and for painting walls it is an excellent choice. In addition, latex compositions are excellent for walls.

For the floor, including parquet, the best choice would be an oil paint with high moisture resistance and wear resistance.

Acrylic paint is best for windows, furniture, doors. It is safe, odorless, dries quickly. Since wood absorbs paint well, such surfaces should be painted in at least two layers.
