Liquid wallpaper do it yourself: master-class on making

Making a liquid wallpaper with your own hands is an unexpected decision that will make the house unusual, beautiful and cozy.

Special features

Liquid wallpaper - this is an unusual coating for walls and ceiling, which is different from the usual wallpaper in that there is no usual canvas in the form of a roll. But at the same time they perfectly cover the surface, while decorating them. Due to the diverse composition of the walls and ceiling can be smooth, slightly rough or embossed, resemble marble chips or soft silk.

The composition is an unusual coating:

  • natural fibers - the basis in the amount of above 95% (cellulose, silk or cotton);
  • water-based acrylic dyes will give color to the composition;
  • adhesive component (most often CMC - carboxymethylcellulose - granulated white powder with a disinfecting component) will bind the composition and keep it on the surface;
  • additional components will become a decor (for example, sparkles).

On the basis of the predominant basis of such material is called cotton, silk or cellulose liquid wallpaper. Cotton is an environmentally friendly material (as well as other species), pleasant and warm to the touch. Silk are distinguished by the fact that they can be applied to concrete and plasterboard coatings, as well as they are well amenable to fragmentary replacement. Pulp - the most economical option, made from recycled wood (sawdust and paper).

All types of liquid wallpaper perfectly hide microcracks on surfaces, for which they enjoy the deserved love of home craftsmen and professional finishers.

Advantages and disadvantages

This type of coverage turned out to be a real find due to the large number of advantages. According to reviews of those who made such repairs themselves, you can note the following features:

  • wallpaper is eco-friendly;
  • they are easy to put on the wall, even without experience of similar work;
  • in the process of applying there are no unpleasant odors;
  • it is easier to work with them than with rolled models, since there is no need for space for putting glue on the cloths, and also no waiting time for the cloth to be impregnated;
  • this composition is very convenient to finish the corners, arches, ceiling, niches, the space around the doors and windows;
  • they hide microcracks and minor irregularities on the surface;
  • Wallpaper absorbs and gives off excess moisture;
  • they are almost not noticeable minor repairs, when the damaged fragment of the coating is removed and replaced with a new one;
  • the composition can be soaked, removed from the wall and used more than once in the same or another room;
  • You can do the same if you need to make some changes to the wall relief (for example, check for new wiring);
  • on the surface there will be no seams, joints and air bubbles;
  • Wallpaper does not fade in 10 years;
  • they repel dust due to their anti-static properties;
  • it is waste-free production - the remaining mass is dried and used as needed;
  • the canvas can be made not only monophonic, but also create a drawing, application, panel;
  • any kind of composition is pleasant to the touch;
  • the mixture is fireproof.

Someone calls the 48-hour drying long and classifies it as negative. But after all, the usual wallpaper completely dry around this time. Controversial is the possibility of use in wet areas. Nevertheless, there are many examples of bathrooms and kitchens, decorated with liquid wallpaper.

But there shouldn't be anything metallic on the wall, otherwise rust will seep through the wet wallpaper.

The surface should not have deep flaws, such defects after drying will be visible. The base on which the blend is applied must be in tone (otherwise it will shine through the wallpaper). What the customers absolutely dislike is the high price when buying a mixture (about 1,000 rubles for a package, which is enough for 3 m2).

Instruments

The composition for application to the surface must be plastic, with good adhesion, not too fast drying, so that you can adjust the surface after a few hours. It is for these characteristics and need to pick up tools. You can do a minimum (one trowel), you can maximum. About him and tell.

The choice of instrument depends on the consistency of the composition and habits of the master.As a rule, in each house there are spatulas of different widths. With their help, it is convenient to prepare the wall for work (remove old wallpaper, putty large holes). But they can also apply the composition on the wall or ceiling. You can prepare metal, acrylic or plastic spatulas.

With their help, you can impose a mixture on the wall, and then level with a trowel or evenly distribute the layer on the surface with a spatula. Someone likes to work with a tough tool, others will arrange a trowel to align conventional wallpaper. For applying the mixture in the corners there are angular spatulas. But not everyone likes them, it is much easier to apply and smooth the mixture directly with your hand.

Trowel - a tool of rectangular, trapezoidal, oval or shaped iron sole for leveling the composition on the surface. To plexiglass or metal attached handle in the middle, which helps when working. Professionals prefer plexiglass, because through it is convenient to control the applied layer. When rubbing the material, the trowel is never fully applied, but only at a slight angle (otherwise, if the trowel was detached from the wall or ceiling, the mixture may be on the tool, and not on the surface).

Trowel can be metal, the main thing - with a smooth surface.When the distribution of the next portion of the mixture on the surface of the trowel is first up, then down, and end in a circular motion. If such a tool is not in the arsenal of the home master, then it must be purchased. This will greatly speed up the work.

Another tool - a transparent grater. It is very similar to the trowel, but more often it has a different handle shape. Its task is to level the layer a few hours after application, when it becomes clear that the layer has defects and is uneven on the surface. To level it, the grater is moistened in water and gently, but the coating is compared with some effort.

If the wallpaper is dry, then they are moistened with a spray.

The next tool is a roller for leveling (used instead of a grater) and applying liquid wallpaper to the surface. For the first action, it is permissible to use any roller with a short nap, which is moistened in water before use. Instead, you can pre-moisten the surface with a spray. Roller hold on the wallpaper, pressing and aligning them.

If the surface is too smooth, then using a ridge roller, you can add relief.

To do this, it is necessary to moisten with water, and, strongly pressing, walk on the surface.

With a liquid and uniform consistency roller can apply the mixture on the walls and ceiling. For this, a tool with a rare pile, which should be sufficiently rigid, is suitable. Then the mixture will not stick to the villi, but flat on the walls.

For surface treatment of a large area using a pistol hopper.

This is a convenient container where the mixture is placed. Under pressure in 2 atmospheres, an even layer is applied with such an electric apparatus (for a working day it can be 200 m2). But for his retention need physical strength.

Thus, whether to buy a lot of tools or do a minimum is an individual choice of a home craftsman.

Factory Coverage

Today, many countries produce liquid wallpaper on an industrial scale. This allows buyers to choose what they like best. Moreover, even a foreign manufacturer often has its enterprises in Russia, which significantly reduces the cost of wallpaper mix.

According to experts and ordinary customers, the highest quality products are the following brands:

  • Leroy Merlin (France, production deployed in many countries);
  • "Bioplast" (Russia, Belgorod, sells products in several CIS countries);
  • Silk Plaster (Russia, Moscow, sells products to many countries of the world).

Leroy Merlin products are the French quality of decorative plaster. She does not need a perfectly flat surface before application. It copes with the function of sound insulation. Wall-paper is elastic that will allow not to crack to a covering even after shrinkage of the house. The basis is silk, cotton or polyester. The binder is an acrylic dispersion. Diluted with water.

The company "Bioplast" is Russian, but has offices in the CIS countries. Unfortunately, not all representative offices honestly fulfill their obligations. As a result, substandard materials appeared, which turned out to be harmful to health. Buyers like the products of "Bioplast", but it is necessary to choose exactly Belgorod production.

The advantages of these compounds:

  • compliance with all standards in production;
  • easy application to the surface;
  • various color scale;
  • providing heat and sound insulation.

Also, users say that these mixtures are inherent in all the advantages of liquid wallpaper.

Silk Plaster is one of the most popular manufacturers. This product is safe, copes well with mechanical loads, sudden temperature changes, very high humidity. The mixtures are sold in semi-finished form: the content is diluted with water and waiting for the fibers to get wet. But buyers note that their color range is much poorer than the aforementioned manufacturers.

But there are other manufacturers: Polish Poldecor, Russian Casavaga, Japanese Silkoat, Turkish Bayramix Koza. Buyers have plenty to choose from. The main thing is not to save on quality so that in a year such wallpaper plaster does not fall off from the wall or ceiling. Or make a liquid wallpaper yourself.

Materials

Indeed, making sure of the positive qualities of liquid wallpaper, it is quite possible to make them with your own hands at home. For this you need to think what will be the basis (it is needed most), fillers and a binder.

The foundation

The cheapest base option is paper. At the same time you should know that glossy paper will not work - it will not break up into the necessary fibers.It is advisable to use waste paper with the least amount of ink, such as egg trays or toilet paper. But you can take the old newspapers and magazines. Ideal - old porous wallpaper. And they can be exactly from the room where the planned repair.

Also, as this component, you can use medical cotton or synthetic winterizer in the ratio of 1 kg of paper per 0.250 g of wool. Vata must be chopped, uncoupled into fibers. But cotton wool, synthetic winterizer or warming variant “ecowool” themselves can be the basis without using paper. Wool, linen or polyester can play this role.

There is a material that does not even need to be cut - sawdust. Excellent base for environmentally friendly wall and ceiling coating. If the stock of the hostess has a large amount of old yarn, then it can be the basis. Then it also needs to be crushed.

Fillers

If the yarn is not so much, then it can act as a filler. Long multi-colored or monochrome fibers will look very beautiful among the basics. Also, the filler can be colored threads, sequins (glitter), pieces of cloth, tree bark, mica powder, stone chips, pieces of dried algae.The total amount of these components should not exceed 200 g per 1 kg of base.

It is important to remember that the smaller the base and fillers, the smoother the wall will be. For more pronounced relief the number of components should be greater.

Binders

Experts recommend to bind the composition using wallpaper glue CMC based on modified starch. It is an inexpensive glue, but it has antifungal effect, which is very important, especially for wet rooms. On 1 kg of paper 120-150 g of dry powder will be required.

In addition to CMC, you can use Bustilat glue, PVA or wallpaper casein. Instead of glue, you can use acrylic putty. Work will be more difficult, but the wallpaper will be more resistant to abrasion. There are two more components that can act as binding components - this is gypsum or alabaster. But it will be much harder for a non-professional to work with them, since alabaster dries quickly and the speed of work must be very high.

Colorants

It is necessary to purchase dyes that are added in the manufacture of water-based paints. To obtain a uniform color, the color is added at the moment of mixing all the components.If there is a desire to get a non-uniform composition, then the color should be mixed twice: first carefully mix with all the components, the second - before applying to the wall, add to the container and slightly mix.

Manufacturing methods

Before you start using paper as a base, you need to prepare it. Paper and cardboard are torn into small pieces and soaked in cold water for 12 hours. If old newspapers and magazines are used, then the composition of the ink will be gray. It can be bleached (but, unfortunately, not completely) with chlorine or oxygen bleach. Chlorine will have to be neutralized with sodium thiosulfate.

Bleaching can be carried out repeatedly. But in the end, the paper should be washed and pressed. After that, a drill with a special nozzle is crushed. To facilitate the process, water is added to the container (per 1 kg of pressed paper and 1 liter of water). When the paper is ready, it needs to be connected to other components.

To do this, you need a large basin, which poured a little water. In case spangles are used, they are first mixed in water. Then the paper is thrown in there and glue is injected.After thorough mixing, the mixture should resemble mild cottage cheese. Then add the remaining components, including the color scheme. After re-kneading the mass is transferred to plastic bags, close them and leave for 6-8 hours for ripening.

In the event that sawdust or other material serves as the basis, time for softening will be saved. The basis is mixed with an adhesive composition in a 1: 1 ratio, the remaining components are added. The amount of water can be different, it needs to be added gradually. After that, the mixture is placed in a bag and left for maturation (7-8 hours).

Detailed master class:

So, to prepare the mixture yourself, it will take much more time than the shopping option. But this work is simple. And the right of choice remains for the home master: make the composition yourself or buy it in a store.

When the mixture has gone to ripening, this time can be used to prepare the walls, if this has not been done before. If there is no full confidence in the quality of the coating or there is to work with a new wall (ceiling), then the surface should be prepared in advance.

Wall preparation

Particular attention to this issue is due to the fact that liquid wallpaper because it is called that they are based on liquid, which, connecting with the surface of the wall, will absorb everything that is there. As a result, not only rust from metal nails and similar elements can appear through the wallpaper, but also oil paint stains, dirt, etc. Therefore, this work needs to be done very well. The algorithm of work will be as follows:

  • Removing old wallpaper from the surface. If there is another coating on the wall, then you need to remove falling off putty, as well as oil paint or whitewash.
  • Putty problem areas, without attaching great importance to microcracks.
  • Bare concrete or bricks need to be treated with a plaster spackling mixture so that it absorbs less moisture. Other types of surfaces will help a good impregnation or primer. Moreover, it is necessary to primer 1-3 times, so that the wall would really be solid. Drywall requires a special approach. Often only seams are treated. When working with liquid wallpaper, this option will not work, because the seams will be noticeable after the mixture dries. The entire plasterboard construction is ground completely to a uniform tone.
  • If tinting is used, it is better to cover the wall first with the same color. This will give a uniform surface, the wallpaper will not shine through.
  • It is worth checking again whether there are any differences in surface level greater than 3 mm. On a freshly painted surface it is easier to do. If there are any, then you should not be lazy, you need to level the wall and re-primed.

Do not forget that, unlike other wallpaper, liquid very well relate to ventilation. Stick them better in the warm season. The temperature in the room should be above 15 degrees.

Determine the proportions

To name the exact proportions is quite difficult. After all, different material will be used in different sizes. But the master's reference point is called this: on a surface of 4-5 m2, 1 kg of paper, 5 liters of water, and 1 kg of glue will be required. Knowing the area of the surface to be coated, it is possible to calculate the approximate consumption of material.

If the basis is sawdust, then the proportions for preparing the mixture are the following: 1 kg of sawdust, 5 liters of water, 0.5 kg of glue, 0.5 kg of gypsum, antiseptic and dye, and also decorative fillers.

How to apply?

Since several bags with a mixture were soaked in advance, there cannot be exactly the same composition in each of them. After all, even a few grams of color will give another shade.Therefore, experts advise to prepare the final composition before applying to the wall as follows: from each bag take equal portions and mix thoroughly in a container.

Start finishing need from the window. After an hour and a half of work, re-walk and level the surface. This is already done with a float moistened with water. The movements are counterclockwise.

Apply a small portion of the mixture to the wall with a hand or spatula. Attach the trowel to the wall at an angle of 15 degrees and start leveling the mixture up, down, right and left. The last movement is circular. The layer of wallpaper should be no more than 1 cm, but most often it is made 2-4 mm thick. As soon as the coating is leveled, take the next batch and do the same.

Liquid wallpaper is good because you do not need to suffer with corners, as when gluing other types of wallpaper. The mixture is applied by hand to the corner, leveled. Thus, it is much easier to make the angle even.

The technology of application will change if there is a pattern or stencil on the surface.

Dressing

Surface decoration using drawings for beginners can be difficult. After all, on a large area you need to correctly consider the proportions.Decorators recommend using the following technique. On a piece of glass put a sketch of the picture. A beam of a desk lamp is sent to the wall to be decorated, in front of which glass with a sketch is exposed. So the picture is reflected on the wall. It must be transferred to the wall after it is primed, and then work with liquid wallpaper. Such a trick will help create any beautiful pattern. The time interval between the coating of different colors - 4 hours.

It is much easier to work with the stencil. It can be created for one use (for example, sun with rays, car) or multiple (flower ornament). Hence, the basis for the stencil should be strong enough: hard cardboard, plywood. A stencil is applied to the wall, and a patterned monochrome or multi-color pattern is made on it. Then use liquid wallpaper of a different color around the image.

But you can decorate in other ways. For example, using an appliqué or a three-dimensional pattern of the same liquid wallpaper. And if the wall surface is monotonous, then you can decorate it with voluminous figures.

The use of reflective materials in the composition of the mixture (mica powder,sparkles) will help to create a unique flavor with proper lighting. Wall sconces in combination with this decor will create an unusual atmosphere and decorate the room.

Care

Natural liquid wallpaper - breathable material. But in this state it is not subjected to wet cleaning. To keep the coating longer, it is coated with acrylic varnish. So really the wallpaper gets dirty less, you can gently clean them with water. But the breathing effect along with the varnish is lost. Therefore, some decide that the soiled fragment of wallpaper is better to replace than to varnish the entire area.

Examples in the interior

Thanks to the multi-colored colors, the wallpaper can be completely different colors. This is what the authors took advantage of this unusual decor. A bright accent can hide cover flaws and deservedly attract attention.

Liquid wallpaper is a convenient material not only for home comfort, but also a strict office, hotel complex and museum space. Strict classic and home comfort are subject to this unusual coating.

A good option for the filler is long, large fibers, which create the effect of compressed fabric.The drawing becomes large and does not require additional decoration.

The use of a large number of colors requires skill in the work and special care. In addition, each previous color should be allowed to dry out, if according to the idea the colors have clear edges.

If the surface of the wall is a complete picture with a smooth transition of colors using different shades, then it deserves the highest appreciation of the artist's skill.
