How to hang a picture and other items on the wall of plasterboard?

In modern interior design, wall-covering with gypsum plasterboard is quite common. With the help of GKL level walls, create niches, partitions and even cabinets with shelves. Work with drywall sheets does not require special skills, the material itself is simple, easy and economical, and the result always looks neat.

Special features

In fact, gypsum board is a solid gypsum panel pasted over with thick cardboard. Cardboard protects the panel from cracking and spilling, and also allows you to screw in the panel screws and screws. When after repair it is necessary to arrange furniture, household appliances and other furnishings, the question arises how to hang a heavy TV or shelf, because the sheet of drywall itself is quite fragile, it will not sustain something heavier than the frame for a photo.

It seems that there is no way out of this situation.However, if you evaluate all the advantages and disadvantages of a particular fastener system and choose the right one, you can always find a way to place even the heaviest structure on such a wall.

What can be fixed?

Experienced builders claim that the plasterboard wall can withstand a load of up to 55 kilograms per fastener, it is only important to choose the fastener correctly. There are several types of fastening systems used in the finishing room GKL. Most often, various dowels are used, which are screwed only into the drywall sheet itself, without reaching the wall behind it.

Various devices allow the plastic, nylon or iron parts of the dowel to unfold in the emptiness behind the plasterboard and cuddle up on the back side, which significantly increases the strength of such fastening.

Types of dowels, allowing to hang an object weighing no more than 35 kilograms:

  • universal dowel (withstands loads up to 3 kg);
  • dowel "driva" (up to 30 kg);
  • dowel "umbrella" (no more than 6 kg);
  • dowel "butterfly" (withstands loads up to 10 kg);
  • dowel "Hartmut" or "mole" (within 35 kg).

If it is necessary to hang an object weighing more than 35 kilograms, it is not enough to use as an anchor for the dowel - an additional installation of auxiliary elements is necessary.

  • Installation of mortgages. In this case, it is necessary to plan in advance, even before installing plasterboard walls, the places where this or that equipment and furniture will hang. In these places a wooden bar or shield is fastened to the concrete, into which the fastening mechanisms behind the plasterboard will then be screwed.

For all its reliability, mortgages have one big drawback: it is necessary to plan in advance the whole situation of the room in order to take into account where and at what height to fix the timber to the gypsum board.

  • Installation of horizontal tires. Some sets of modern furniture sets include a special metal strip with holes for fasteners and bends for hanging shelves and cabinets. It is mounted along the entire length of the wall and allows you to more evenly distribute the load on the drywall.

It is also advisable to mount such a tire on a wooden cant or metal profile previously laid for drywall, or to use anchor bolts to fasten the tire itself.

  • Anchor fasteners. This type of fastener is suitable only for main walls, not plasterboard partitions. When installing an anchor in a plasterboard wall, a small hole is cut out, allowing you to drill a concrete wall with a perforator and insert a metal dowel into it, into which the anchor bolt itself will screw.

This mount is the strongest and allows you to hang on the wall, even the heaviest appliances and massive kitchen cabinets. At the same time, it is also the most time-consuming to mount and the price of materials.

If necessary, place on the wall small decorative elements in the form of a mirror, shelves or paintings, you can use a universal dowel or a model of "driva". Before using a conventional dowel, it is necessary to drill a hole with a diameter of 8 millimeters, insert a polypropylene part and screw in the screw itself. The plastic part expands during the screwing in of the metal and adheres firmly to the drywall.

In contrast to the universal, the dribel "Driva" does not require a screwdriver or a drill. It is screwed directly into the gypsum board without pre-drilling holes.Most often use the plastic version of the product, so as not to allow drywall to crumble or crack.

The dowel “umbrella” is perfect for hanging on a plasterboard wall of medium-sized objects. Made of metal in the form of a hook or a simple screw, it opens behind the drywall like the spokes of an umbrella and distributes the load on the plasterboard evenly. In order to install such a mount, it is necessary to drill a hole into which you need to insert fasteners and screw in the screw itself. Such fasteners would be the perfect solution to hang a sconce or chandelier.

The dowel "butterfly" is made of nylon. When screwing a screw into it, it opens up in two directions, like open wings, and rests on the wrong side of drywall, for which he received its name.

The strongest are dowel "mole" and "Hartmut." The first is a metal structure with side slots and a screw screwed into it. In the gypsum board, it is necessary to drill with a drill a hole that fits the size of the dowel, slightly bend the "moth" wings and screw it in until it stops in the hole.To fix the Hartmut dowel, it is necessary to drill a hole with a diameter of 13 millimeters and insert fasteners into it with a folded spacer. Then the dowel is pulled out, and the expansion part, opening, presses against the inside of the gypsum board. It is necessary to secure it and break off the excess.

On the kitchen

Most often, the problem of fixing certain items on a plasterboard arises when placing furniture in the kitchen. To save space, a part of the kitchen unit is hung on the wall above the work surface. Even the lightest box weighs about 7-15 kilograms, and it still holds various dishes, products and other household items. Thus, the average weight of a filled kitchen cabinet ranges from 20 to 50 kilograms, depending on the material of the furniture itself.

Such a weight can withstand anchoring, or it is necessary to pre-make wooden mortgages outside the walls of drywall in those places where you plan to hang the top boxes.

For fastening medium-sized items like a chandelier, open shelves or paintings decorated with a wooden baguette, you can use the "tree" or "Hartmut." For attaching small light objects such as cornices, curtains or wall clocks, a butterfly or an umbrella will suffice.On the usual U-shaped dowels can hang portraits of family members or friends. Also, using conventional dowels, it is very convenient to mount the baseboards on a plasterboard wall, since the use of glue can destroy the cardboard layer, which keeps the gypsum in a dry pressed state.

In the bathroom

The biggest problem of fixing on drywall in the bathroom is to install on the wall of the heater. Water heaters are of two types: flow and storage. There should be no problems with a flow-through hitch, as it weighs on average up to 10 kilograms and is mounted with the help of dowels like “butterfly” or “drift”. However, such water heaters have a significantly higher price and consumption of electricity, therefore, most of the time in bathrooms use storage boilers. The average weight of such a drive varies in the range of 80-100 kilograms - not one gypsum wall can withstand it.

To reduce the load on gypsum can, using the methods of preliminary bookmarks or mounting on pre-installed metal reinforcement. Both methods can be used only if you know exactly the dimensions and weight of the water heater purchased before the installation of a plasterboard coating.If the repair is already done, and the heater needs to be hung up, a chemical anchor can come to the rescue. This method of attachment is implemented using a special chemical solution, similar to mounting foam. Expanding and solidifying, this solution firmly fixes a metal pin inserted into it, onto which an apparatus weighing 80 kilograms can be hung.

It is also possible to hang the sink and fix the cabinet above it with the help of the “driva” or “hartmut”, and for the shelves and mirrors, for example, use the “butterfly” dowel.

In the hall

In the hallway usually there are no heavy objects that require hanging on the wall. As a rule, all furniture is placed on the floor: a wardrobe, a stool or a shoemaker. A small lamp and a hanger are mounted on the wall, but ordinary dowels or “umbrellas” are enough for them. In some cases, a horizontal bar may be hung, for which a preliminary bookmark or anchorage is needed.

Tips and mistakes

A newcomer who has not previously encountered the solution of such problems can easily overlook some important details:

  • When installing mortgages, you will have to take a picture of the finished work from different angles or draw up a plan-scheme so as not to forget the exact location of their location.Otherwise, miss the specially set mortgage is very easy.
  • It is not necessary to hang very heavy objects on the dowels, even if they reach the brickwork or concrete. Even the strongest dowel over time will sag and deform the gypsum board, therefore it is necessary to use a mount with anchors.
  • For any mounting it is better to use several dowels or anchors - so the load will be distributed more evenly, and the probability of falling out of the mounting will be significantly lower.
  • If the drywall is not yet covered with wallpaper and is not painted, at the joints of the sheets, you can clearly see the location of the metal profile. Unlike the coating itself, the profiles are made of metal, they are less susceptible to deformation, so a heavy object can be hung on the wall by screwing the mount precisely into the metal base.
  • It is always better for a beginner to choose a more secure mount, even if you only have to hang a small picture or a shelf with a flower pot.

Successful examples and options

      The bracket for the installation of the TV will be mounted on a wooden tab, reinforced with a metal plasterboard profile.This tab is tentatively planned and mounted before plastering the wall plasterboard. Such a mount will allow you to use even simple dowels, which will be firmly fixed inside the wooden beam.

      For fastening the upper part of the kitchen set used mounted horizontal tire. Such a mounting will significantly reduce the point load on the gypsum boards and distribute the weight of the hanging cabinets over a large area.

      Installation on pre-mounted metal reinforcement is also used. The fastener will not interact with the fragile drywall, but with a strong metal profile attached in turn to the concrete wall.

      Placing household appliances and furniture on the walls can significantly save space in small rooms and rooms.
