Choosing a baby sleeping bag

 Choosing a baby sleeping bag

Every parent wants only the best for their child, which is why manufacturers are trying to produce a wide assortment of goods that are in demand among young mothers and dads. One of these unusual, but very important items is a baby sleeping bag.

Advantages and disadvantages

Sleeping bags were originally created for tourism, but over time they came into use for everyday home use by children under 5 years old, which is why a large variety of models of bags of the most interesting colors and textures appeared on the market. The surface of the product can be decorated with the image of fairy-tale characters, plant or abstract prints.

The advantages of such a bag a lot. The main thing is that when using it the child is not revealed in a dream. It is no secret that as soon as small children grow out of diapers, they actively begin to move their arms and legs, so the blanket is often thrown off, and the child is open. This can cause inconvenience and provoke the development of colds, especially if the house is cool. Moreover, such a problem is peculiar not only to newborn crumbs - children under 3, or even under 5 years old, are often revealed in dreams.

In a sleeping bag this will not happen, and if we are talking about a baby, then during the night feedings it will not even need to be taken out of the heat, therefore, the baby will not freeze and, having dodged, will fall asleep faster.

Sleeping bag is absolutely safe. Kids, especially babies, can put a pillow or blanket on their face in their sleep, or they can go down, entangled in a bedspread. In any case, by itself, he can get far from always, and if there is no adult nearby, the blanket can easily twist and pinch the neck of the child, and then trouble will happen. There can be no such danger in a sleeping bag.

In the bag the baby feels very comfortable. After you have laid the child to sleep, he has feelings similar to those he experienced while in the womb. This is what contributes to the sensation of warmth, comfort and tranquility.

However, without the minuses, too, has not done. First, not every child will be able to fall asleep quickly in such a shelter, especially if they are not used to it. Secondly, many parents do not like when children sleep in “pampers”, but in this case the child can quickly spoil a sleeping bag. Thirdly, in a sleeping bag it is quite inconvenient to change the diaper. If it is quite simple to do this with a regular blanket (just throw it back, carry out all the necessary manipulations and cover it again), then you need to remove the baby from the sleeping bag, and after changing the diaper, put it back. In this case, there is always a risk that the baby will wake up.

Another disadvantage is associated with a specific model of a sleeping bag without mittens: when using such a product, the hands of the baby will always be on the surface, and in the offseason, when the houses are usually still cool air, the child can freeze very much.

What to look for when buying?

The choice of a sleeping bag should take into account a whole complex of factors.

Season

Most often, manufacturers produce three types of sleeping bags: winter, summer, as well as for three seasons (autumn / spring and summer). Seasonality must be taken into account, especially if you plan to use the object in hikes. If you intend to travel in the hot season, when the night temperature does not fall below 6 degrees, there is no point in buying a winter sleeping bag: in such a device it will be hot and uncomfortable. But a summer bag, like a three-season one, will be absolutely useless in the winter, when it cannot protect the baby from bad weather and cold air. It is obvious that at -15 degrees a light blanket will not be able to maintain optimal +17 degrees for normal vital activity.

Tip: think in advance whether the child will sleep in a tent or in the open. The first option is preferable, because in this case the child will not experience heat, being entirely inside the bag, and at the same time will be protected from wind and rain.

Filler

This factor is of great importance when choosing a sleeping bag, since the material with which the bag is filled is responsible not only for the thermal insulation of the crumbs, but also for the weight of the product, its durability.As a rule, in sleeping bags I use fluff or synthetic compounds. The down keeps heat well, reliably protecting the child from the cold and wind gusts, and its weight is much lower than that of artificial formulations. However, such a filler very often causes allergic reactions in a child and can be dangerous for his life and health. Such a bag can be bought only if you are absolutely sure that the body of the baby is tolerant of the material.

Synthetic fillers are slightly heavier than fluff, and the degree of thermal insulation is slightly lower. But the advantages are obvious: if the down sleeping bag gets wet, then it will immediately become heavy and stop performing insulating functions, and it will take a very long time to dry it. Synthetic materials are easy to clean and wash very quickly, and besides, even while soaking, they continue to retain heat. It is also important that the cost of artificial materials is much lower, therefore such a sleeping bag is available for most young families.

Despite these advantages, children under 3 years old are better off buying bags with natural fillers.

The size

There are several types of sleeping bags.

As a rule, the following varieties are presented in stores:

  • for newborns;
  • for children 1-3 years old;
  • for kids 3-5 years old.

However, not so long ago, transformer models appeared on the market that can be used from birth to the upper age bar: the product has the ability to change the length as the child grows. In addition, it would be quite good if the bag has the ability to regulate the size of the hood. It is desirable that the sleeping bag matches the growth of the child. Do not buy too long a model, because the crumb can simply get lost in it and hurt yourself. Optimally, if the product is larger than the growth of the baby from the legs to the neck, 10-15 cm. Only in this case he will be able to move freely, but at the same time and not get confused.

The form

Today, manufacturers offer bags of several types.

  • Cocoon. These sleeping bags in their appearance and functionality resemble adults, however, they are intended for children of 3–8 years old.
  • A blanket. Suitable for children from a year to 3 years.
  • The envelope. Purchased for the smallest and used from birth to 1-1,5 years.

The cocoon is distinguished by the fact that it is already in the feet, and in the shoulders, on the contrary, it is expanded. Thanks to this form, it is much warmer than all other types of sleeping bags. However, it is not very comfortable to sleep in them, therefore such models are most often used exclusively as options for tourism. However, in the shops you can find other options for cocoons, which, on the contrary, are narrowed at the top and extend downwards. Such a device allows the child to lie quietly, without restricting movement, so the model can be used as a daily for the house.

Neck

In order to avoid accidents, you can buy only those bags, the neck of which is relatively free, but at the same time not so much that the baby can take it off independently. It is optimal if there is a distance of 1.5 cm between it and the child’s neck.

Back

The back of the bag should not have any seams, decorative bows / appliqués / buttons that can cause discomfort to the child in a dream. Nothing should interfere with the restful sleep of the crumbs.

Clasps

The best option to fasten a sleeping bag is a zipper that opens from the bottom up and small rivets on the shoulders.

Tips

Besides all of the above, to sleeping bags the following requirements:

  • the material used for sewing should be without chemical treatment, hypoallergenic and breathable;
  • the possibility of washing at a temperature of 40 degrees;
  • The weight of the object should not be more than 10% of the body weight of the baby.
