How to glue drywall to the wall?

One of the easiest and most effective ways to level the surface is to finish the walls with plasterboard sheets. There are two ways of fastening material: frame and frameless. The frame method involves the use of special metal profiles, which slightly reduces the area of the room. In certain cases, it is preferable to use the frameless fastening method. Almost anyone can cope with the frameless installation of gypsum sheets. It is only important to know how to properly glue the gypsum board to the wall.

Features of sticking

Fastening plasterboard sheets in a frameless way saves room space and money spent on repairs.However, it is not always possible to glue material to the wall. For this method of installation, three conditions must be met:

  • on the surface there should not be strong irregularities and various defects larger than five centimeters;
  • the walls of the room do not need warming by penoplex or other material;
  • for drywall does not need to hide any engineering systems in the house.

Frameless installation method is great for finishing small rooms. It is possible to level with plasterboard sheets not only walls, but also ceilings. GCL can be glued to the following surfaces:

  • brick walls;
  • plastered surfaces;
  • aerated concrete;
  • walls of foam blocks;
  • polystyrene foam surfaces;
  • ceramic tile.

For successful repair work, it is important to choose the right adhesive solution, prepare the surface well and follow the recommendations for frameless fastening of the material.

Types of glue: how to choose?

The choice of adhesive mixture for fixing drywall depends on a number of factors. First of all, it is the type of surface material that is to be finished. Modern manufacturers of building materials are ready to offer a wide range of glue for drywall. Select the main types of mixtures that are suitable for gluing material to the surface:

  • On a plaster basis. The most popular plaster mixes of the Knauf and Volma brands.
  • Polyurethane adhesive.
  • Polyurethane foam sealant (polyurethane foam).
  • Tile adhesive
  • Silicone adhesive blends.
  • Liquid Nails.
  • Plaster mixes based on gypsum or cement.
  • Plaster on penopleks.

Universal compositions are suitable for work with almost all types of coatings, whether it be concrete, foam block walls, bricks or aerated concrete slabs. For a concrete flat wall, a concrete contact solution is an excellent option. Silicone-based compounds are suitable for attaching material to completely smooth surfaces (for example, plastic or tile).

In addition to the use of special adhesive solutions for drywall, Mounting can be done using polyurethane foam sealant and screws. Mounting foam for gluing plasterboard sheets on the wall is used quite rarely, since the process of such finishing works is not easy.

Tips for difficult cases

Frameless installation of drywall is much easier frame.Glue the material with their own hands is not difficult. However, with this method of attachment in certain cases, there may be some difficulties in carrying out repairs. The complexity of the process of gluing drywall sheets to the wall depends on the following factors:

  • surface type;
  • the quality of drywall;
  • type of adhesive mixture;
  • level of surface roughness.

Given some recommendations for working with various surfaces, it is possible to significantly simplify the installation procedure of the gypsum board. The method of applying the adhesive depends on the type of surface, as well as the level of unevenness of the wall. Consider some recommendations for working with adhesive mixtures:

  • During the work with the gas-concrete basis it is worth remembering that glue needs to be applied on a wall, but not on gypsum plasterboards.
  • If the walls are almost flat, the mortar can be spread over the entire sheet of drywall. You can also put the adhesive mixture in separate "piles" around the perimeter and in the center of the sheet. The larger the area will be covered with glue, the more secure the mount will be.
  • When installing it is necessary to carefully monitor the level of sheets already glued.If necessary, the surface is leveled with a carpenter's hammer.

To finish the premises with a high level of humidity (kitchen, bathroom, basement, balcony), you must purchase sheets of drywall with moisture resistant properties. The adhesive mixture should also have good moisture resistance.

Very smooth walls of concrete must be treated with a concrete contact in order to increase the level of adhesion. If the surface was previously plastered, you need to make sure that there are no areas on the wall with flaking or peeling plaster.

Foundation preparation

To plasterboard sheets firmly glued to the wall, the surface must first be prepared. First of all, the old finishing covering is removed from the base, whether it be wallpaper or paint. Paintwork material on acrylic base is cleaned with the help of a grinder with a nozzle in the form of a petal grinding wheel. The emulsion paint can be removed from the concrete wall using a stiff metal brush.

After the old coating has been cleaned, it is necessary to remove dust and dirt from the surface. To improve adhesion, the wall must be primed.If there are serious defects or irregularities on the wall, then gluing the gypsum plasterboard onto such a surface without prior alignment will fail.

Assembly process

Before you start finishing work, you need to prepare all the necessary tools, calculate the right amount of glue and make measurements on the surface. The consumption of glue will depend on the type of solution chosen. On one square meter can take five kilograms of solution.

In order not to be distracted while finishing work on finding the right tools, it is better to prepare them in advance.

For gluing drywall to the walls, the following tools may be needed:

  • building level;
  • construction plummet;
  • drywall knife;
  • capacity for glue solution;
  • construction mixer, which is required for mixing glue;
  • joiner's hammer for leveling plasterboard;
  • notched trowel for applying adhesive mixture;
  • roulette.

If you purchased the adhesive mixture in a dry form, it is necessary to prepare a solution suitable for application. In this case, there are no specific recommendations for the manufacture of adhesive composition, since this process depends on the type of glue purchased.Detailed instructions for mixing the solution can be found on the packaging.

In addition to the adhesive mixture for the final stage of installation will require filler. With the help of putty mixture, grouting of joints between sheets of drywall will be done.

Having prepared the tools, glue and drywall itself for the finishing work, it is necessary to make a marking on the wall for the material.

In accordance with the measurements made and the established markup, drywall sheets are cut. It should be borne in mind that the height of the sheets should be less than the height of the walls by about two centimeters. The difference in height is necessary so that during installation it is possible to make small gaps between the gypsum board and the floor, gypsum board and ceiling. Under all the sockets and switches in the room, you must make holes in the drywall in advance.

The technology of further works on pasting the walls with plasterboard sheets will depend on the level of surface irregularities.

Smooth surface

Concrete or well plastered walls usually have an almost flat surface. It is quite easy to glue drywall on such a base.The only difficulty that may arise during installation is the installation of electrical wiring.

Electrical wiring is placed under the GCR. When the construction does not allow to place the wires in such a way that they are not pressed against the plasterboard sheets, it is necessary to make holes for the wiring in the wall.

After the wiring problem is solved, glue is prepared and the finishing material is cut, you can proceed to pasting the surface. The adhesive solution is applied to a sheet of drywall with a notched metal spatula. If possible, grease with as much glue as possible.

Plasterboard is installed on the wooden beams, which play the role of a certain step. Through the holes made in the sheet, cables are passed through or switches and sockets are inserted, after which you can begin to glue the walls. The plate must be slightly raised and pressed well to the base. With the help of the level the vertical alignment takes place, then the sheet of drywall must be pressed against the wall with even greater force.

Minor defects

Brick walls most often have irregularities within five centimeters from the normal level.Sticking drywall to the surface, which has small irregularities, is practically no different from the previous method.

Particular attention in this case should be given to the choice of adhesive solution. For facing uneven surfaces, glue should be applied to the finishing material with a large layer. Some types of adhesive mixtures can be applied in layers no more than two centimeters, which in this case may be insufficient.

Apply the adhesive mixture to the material must be "piles". The distance between the points of glue should be no more than two and a half centimeters. In the center of the mixture is distributed at intervals of four and a half centimeters. The slab is mounted on the beams, lightly pressed against the wall, vertically aligned and pressed down to the surface again.

Large deviations

On strongly uneven walls, it is desirable to fix the drywall on the metal profiles. However, it is also possible to glue the material onto a curved surface. In this case, stitching the wall under the wiring is not necessary. Wires can be easily laid in the grooves and fasten. Further work is performed in the following sequence:

  • Some plates need to be cut into separate pieces with a width of no more than fifteen centimeters. Such pieces will serve as the basis for a plasterboard coating. The number and length of strips depend on the size of the room.
  • The cut pieces must be glued to the walls at a distance of no more than sixty centimeters from each other.
  • After the base is completely dry out of the drywall strips, the plates are glued to the lighthouses. Glue mortar is spread over the surface of the installed beacons and a whole sheet of drywall is glued to the base.

Binding sheets together

There are cases when it is necessary to glue one drywall block to another. To glue the sheets together is not particularly difficult. Surface preparation in this case will not have any special features. First, cleaning is carried out from pollution, then - priming the surface. In the presence of seams between the sheets on the old drywall coating, they must be sealed. Also note that the seams on the inner and outer layer should not be the same.

With foam

Polyurethane foam is used less frequently for bonding drywall sheets.This method takes a lot of time and effort, if only because the plates need to be pressed well against the wall every fifteen minutes for an hour.

There are several different methods for fixing drywall with foam. The most common ways:

  • using screws;
  • sizing of the foam itself.

In the first case in the plasterboard with the help of a drill it is necessary to make holes in the amount of at least twelve. Then the plate is pressed against the wall and with the help of a pencil on the surface marked the location of the drilled holes. All marked points on the wall are drilled under plastic plugs, into which screws will be screwed in to attach GLA.

By means of screws or self-tapping screws sheets of gypsum cardboard fasten to a wall. Near the fixing points, several more holes are drilled through which they fill the space between the slab and the wall with mounting foam.

For fixing plasterboard sheets with foam, it is not necessary to resort to using self-tapping screws and drilling. But this method is acceptable in the case of facing very smooth walls. Foam is applied on the reverse side of the sheet.After distributing the mixture, wait for fifteen minutes, then attach the panel to the wall.

Finishing work

Gypsum board is not used as a finishing coating, but serves as an even base for painting, wallpapering or for any other decorative coating. After the material is glued to the walls, you need to hold A number of final works on surface preparation for subsequent finishing:

  • The joints between sheets of drywall must be sealed. To solve this problem, you can use different putty compounds. The joints are rubbed with a narrow metal spatula.
  • Without waiting for the complete drying of the putty you need to attach a reinforcing tape.
        • The second layer of putty is applied after complete drying of the previous one. Drying time depends on the type of mixture. On average, it is twelve hours.
        • After the second layer of putty is completely dry, the plasterboard must be primed.
        • The primed surface is completely plastered.
        • If the coating is not even enough, the surface must be primed again and apply a second layer of putty.
        • Roughness and irregularities on the finished coating are removed with sandpaper.
        • The last step will be another priming the surface, after which it will be possible to proceed to the finishing of the walls.
